A Dangerous Method – A Preview

The run of quality films we have seen in 2012 looks set to continue into February with the superb collaboration of Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Shame), and Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings, A History of Violence) teaming up with cult director David Cronenberg in A Dangerous Method.

Set on the eve of World War 1, the film focuses on the intense rivalry between Carl Jung (Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Mortensen). Jung is seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, taking the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient. Using the method of his mentor Sigmund Freud, both men are drawn into Sabrina’s world as they fall under her spell.

The film, based on true-life events, is full of ideas about sexuality and is said to give a real insight into Freud and Jung which is both intriguing and ironic as the two men spent their lives trying to gain insight into others.

David Cronenberg always seems to bring out the best of Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises, A History of Violence) and with Fassbender already winning awards for another fine performance this looks like another contender for ‘favourite movie of the year…..so far!’
